It’s still over three months until Election Day, but the Family Values crowd is on the move. Korn resurrects the tour of that name Saturday, July 29 in Antioch, Tennessee, with a line-up featuring Deftones, 10 Years, Stone Sour, Flyleaf and others. This will be Korn singer Jonathan Davis’ first live excursion since a blood infection felled him in Europe last month, and he told Launch he’s chomping at the bit. “We’re just gonna go out there and rock the house,” he said. “I think I’m gonna be extra hungry ’cause it was taken away from me from Europe, so it’s gonna be good. Production-wise, I mean, it’s gonna be different, it’ll be cool. I mean, we’ve got stripper poles, wading pools, paintball gun fields, all kinds of crazy, weird s*** that we’re gonna be doing in each town, so it should be good.”

Davis spent much of the last month recovering from the rare, potentially fatal disorder that forced Korn to cancel most of its European tour in June.

The first Family Values package debuted in 1998 and featured Rammstein, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube and Orgy in addition to Korn. Two later editions, in 1999 and 2001, included acts like Staind, Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, Filter and Method Man.

Korn’s Jonathan Davis Hospitalized with Blood Ailment; Tour Canceled

June 17, 2006

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis was admitted to a London hospital over the weekend for treatment of a blood disorder called immune thrombocytopenic purpura, forcing the band to pull out of at least one European festival gig and deliver an abbreviated set with guest singers at Saturday’s U.K. Download Festival. According to a band spokesperson, Davis may be sidelined for the next three weeks, as he continues to recover.

Korn, who did not perform at Ireland’s Download Festival on Sunday, are also expected to cancel a performance at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam on Tuesday; the remainder of the band’s European tour has been canceled.

A post from Davis on Korn’s official Web site confirmed the illness — a disorder in which a low blood-platelet count prohibits the blood from clotting as it should.

“I started getting these weird bruises all over my body about two weeks ago,” Davis wrote. “I was getting very weak after the shows so I saw a doctor in London Friday. He took some blood tests and when the results came in, they rushed me to the hospital. It turned out that I have ITP … a blood infection where, because of an allergic reaction I had to some medication, my blood platelets were really low. If I continued to headbang onstage, I could have had a brain hemorrhage and dropped dead on the spot.”

According to Davis, while most people have between 140 and 400 platelets in their blood cells, “I had five — no joke.” He has been ordered by his doctors to remain under the hospital’s supervision until “they [can] get my blood in some kind of healthy shape. The doctors are telling me that each day I’ve been here in the hospital, my platelet count has been going up and I should be healthy to play in a few weeks. The doctors have cleared me to walk around a bit but I am unable to perform a show or travel right now. We will do our very best to come back soon to play any dates we are unable to play on this tour.”

During the U.K.’s Download Festival, which took place at Donington Park, Korn delivered an abbreviated 30-minute set with guest singers filling in for Davis.

When guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer, bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu and drummer David Silveria took the stage, a bandmember told the crowd, “We’ve had some issues” but would “play on with some friends of ours,” the Download Festival site reports.

Korn recruited a number of artists to stand in for Davis. Jesse Hasek of 10 Years grabbed the microphone for “It’s On!” while Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows belted out “Falling Away From Me.” Former Coal Chamber and current DevilDriver frontman Dez Fafara handled vocals for “Somebody, Someone” and “Coming Undone,” and Skindred’s Benji Webbe tackled “A.D.I.D.A.S.” Slipknot/ Stone Sour singer Corey Taylor performed “Clown” and “Freak on a Leash,” and Trivium’s Matt Heafy joined the band for “Blind.”

According to a press release issued Monday (June 12), Korn are still expected to headline this year’s 30-city Family Values Tour, which kicks off July 27 in Virginia Beach, Virginia (see “Korn Resurrect Family Values Tour With Deftones, Stone Sour”). The Deftones, Stone Sour, Flyleaf and Dir En Grey are also on the mainstage bill, with the second-stage bill to be announced in the coming weeks.

“We were truly looking forward to playing the rest of the overseas dates,” the members of Korn said in a joint statement. “So we have tremendous regrets about not being able to connect with our fans, whom we know are the best in the world. We want to thank them for their understanding and loyal support — and, at the same time, let them know that we will see them when we return to Europe.”

Korn Resurrect Family Values Tour With Deftones, Stone Sour

April 21, 2006

P.S. Check out Korn Tickets and Family Values Tour Tickets here.

Eight years after creating and headlining the inaugural Family Values Tour, Korn are relaunching the traveling festival this summer with co-headliners the Deftones.

“The first [Family Values] with us on it was the best, and we just decided, let’s do this again,” Korn singer Jonathan Davis said of 1998’s outing with Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein and Orgy.

“We’re gonna break out the old Family Values stuff we got in storage and really put on a cool show.”

Rounding out the mainstage lineup will be Stone Sour, Flyleaf and Dir En Grey, who Davis described as “this crazy Japanese band that are just out of their minds.”

For the first time, the trek will also feature a second stage, with acts to be announced soon. “We’re gonna have some hip-hop acts and some other variety stuff gong on,” Davis said during a recent studio session with Dem Franchize Boyz (see “Are Korn Coming Undone? Rockers Turn To Crunk, Acoustic Songs”). “I think it’s gonna be a really cool summer show.”

Korn are putting the value in Family Values, offering $9.99 lawn tickets at each stop on the tour, which kicks off July 27 in Virginia Beach.

“No band can go down to $9.99 and do the production and that kind of stuff that we’re doing, but the deal we did [becoming equal partners with EMI and promoters Live Nation] allows us to be able to do that, which is really cool,” Davis said. “I don’t want to slap bands for making their ticket prices so high, ’cause I understand production and that stuff costs a lot. … But Madonna’s are like 300 bucks a ticket. I can’t even believe that. Ten bucks for a show is ridiculous, and I think kids that aren’t Korn fans will wanna go just to check out other bands or just go to have a good time.”

Having a good time will also be a priority for Korn, who will balance their intense sets with a lot of backstage hanging out.

“We haven’t toured with [the Deftones] since ’97 or ’96, and we’re really excited,” Davis said. “We love those guys. We started out together. Literally it was us and them, and back in the day we used to drive to Sacramento [California] and play at their home clubs. And they would drive to Huntington Beach and play the clubs we’d play, so we’ve been friends for a long, long time, and it’s cool to be back together again and sharing the same stage.”

And the feelings are mutual, according to Deftones singer Chino Moreno.

“We’ve had a crazy relationship because we’ve always distanced ourselves from Korn so we could be our own band,” Moreno said. “Their first record came out before ours, so it was always like we were following in their footsteps. And I think we had to do that, and now it’s time to just have fun. We don’t care so much about that stuff anymore. We just want to play with friends.”

Moreno also confirmed Davis’ promise that their bands will be performing their collaboration “Wicked” onstage together. “There’s a bunch of cool stuff I want to do,” Moreno said.

Korn just finished a headlining arena trek heavy on album tracks (see “Korn Rock Hometown, Have Street Named After Them On ‘Official Korn Day'”) but are planning a much different show for the summer.

“We’re gonna bring in different songs and play for two hours,” Davis said. “That’s our new thing. We never played for two hours in our whole career. We thought we would die, but now when I get onstage, I want to do more. So it might be more, you never know.”

Deftones will be using the tour to debut new material from their fifth studio album, due in September (see “Why Is The New Deftones Album Taking So Long?”). The bandmembers just came off the Taste of Chaos Tour with Thrice and Atreyu but are looking forward to another festival (see “Taste Of Chaos ’06 Tour Dates Revealed”).

“That was weird because we were the oldest band there. You see a lot of the younger bands, and it’s just a reminder of how things are now,” Moreno said. “It was a good time, but we felt like grandparents out there sometimes.”

After 1998’s run, Family Values returned a year later with Limp Bizkit, Filter, the Crystal Method, Primus, Staind, Mobb Deep, Ja Rule, and Method Man and Redman. In 2001, Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, Staind, Static-X and Deadsy revived the name.

Korn Rock Hometown, Have Street Named After Them On ‘Official Korn Day’

March 30, 2006

Check out Korn Tickets and Family Values Tour Tickets here.

It’s not exactly one of Bakersfield’s busiest streets, but the back access road to Rabobank Arena was named Korn Row on Friday, a day Mayor Harvey Hall officially declared Korn Day.

The green street sign, which stands just a few feet from train tracks that run behind the venue, uses the band’s signature logo, backwards “R” and all.

“It kind of makes us get teary-eyed a little bit,” singer Jonathan Davis confessed to the few hundred fans who attended the mid-afternoon ceremony where the sign and a Korn plaque on the venue were unveiled. “It’s because of all you coming and supporting us.”

After the presentation, the singer told MTV News that the whole thing felt a little surreal.

“This [city] was a place that I dreaded as a teenager because there wasn’t much stuff to do, but it’s always going to hold a special place in my heart,” he said. “It’s a little bit too much to handle. Like, what are these politicians doing here saying they like us?”

It was quite a sight to see a gray-haired mayor man-hugging Fieldy, a state senator’s spokesperson telling fans to “rock on” and a county supervisor calling Korn “the godfather[s] of heavy metal,” but chalk it up to a little hometown pride.

“I asked them to name a Korn song, and they did,” Davis said.

Friday’s street naming was held in conjunction with the kickoff to Korn’s See You on the Other Side tour, which marked the band’s fourth time playing Rabobank, more than any other band.

The show, living up to Davis’ promise of a something special, was heavy on rarities and featured twice as many musicians on stage as a usual Korn performance.

Following sets from 10 Years and Mudvayne, the band took the stage with “It’s On!” and followed with three additional lesser-known tracks (“Clown,” “Divine” and “Love Song”) before playing a hit single, “Falling Away From Me.”

The first three songs featured the band’s current lineup Davis, guitarist Munky, bassist Fieldy and drummer David Silveria — but before “Love Song,” curtains on both sides of Silveria dropped to reveal a second percussionist, second guitarist, keyboardist and backup singer/multi-instrumentalist.

All wearing different animal masks, the additional musicians helped fill the shoes of departed guitarist Brian “Head” Welch and conquer the additional instrumentation on Korn’s latest album, See You on the Other Side. But more than anything else, the extra musicians gave the band an added thickness, especially with thunderous cannon drums.

“It’s exciting with the new elements there,” Davis said backstage. “We knew we wanted to do something different and over the top and not a typical Korn show, so we’re doing new things.”

Another Korn first was packaging some of their hits and live favorites into a medley, which kicked off with Davis returning to the stage in a kilt and playing the bagpipes intro to “Shoots and Ladders” — yielding the loudest crowd response of the night.

A few songs later, after “Got the Life,” Davis closed the first set by himself, delicately singing “Tearjerker” over the sound of guitar feedback.

For the encore, Korn re-emerged with “Twisted Transistor” and another new one, “Hypocrites,” before going out with the one-two punch of “Freak on a Leash” and “Blind,” featuring a momentum-building extended opening from Silveria.

During both the show and the ceremony before, Davis kept his banter to a minimum.

“I’m not trying to go out there and be the center of attention,” the singer explained backstage. “I don’t have LSD: lead singer’s disease.”

During the street sign presentation, however, he did make sure to promise one thing to Korn’s screaming fans, congregating in front of a massive “Welcome Home Korn” sign hanging from a nearby building.

“We will work on getting a real street some day,” he said with a smile.
