Def Leppard and Journey Concert News and Tickets

Def Leppard and Journey, who are in the midst of a co-headlining summer tour, will remain linked for a newly announced batch of fall shows.

After wrapping up the in-progress summer run in late September, the fellow rock vets will return to the stage for about a dozen October dates that are booked into arenas and amphitheaters throughout the US. Details are included below.

Def Leppard continues to back its May release, “Yeah,” a covers album that features the band’s takes on works by The Kinks, Badfinger, T. Rex, David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Free, The Faces and Thin Lizzy, among others. The set features the group’s rendition of David Essex’s “Rock On,” the music video for which recently made its way into the Top 10 on VH1’s “Top 20 Countdown.”

“Yeah” follows last year’s “Def Leppard–Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection,” a two-disc best-of set. Later this year, the band plans to issue “Hysteria: Deluxe Edition,” a souped-up version of its multi-platinum 1988 album, “Hysteria.” The disc is scheduled to surface in “late 2006,” according to the group’s website.

Journey continues to back last year’s “Generations,” its 13th studio album. Produced by Kevin Elson–who also produced Journey’s multi-platinum “Escape,” “Departure” and “Frontiers” albums, as well the double-platinum live set “Captured”–“Generations” is the band’s first collection of all-new material since its 2002, four-song EP, “Red 13.”

Journey recently replaced lead singer Steve Augieri with vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, citing a vocal ailment Augieri is battling.

Augieri had fronted the band since the late ’90s, at which time he took over for original lead singer Steve Perry, who sang on the band’s best-known songs, including hits such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Any Way You Want It” and “Open Arms.”

Soto, who got his start fronting guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen’s band in the mid-’80s, previously worked with Journey guitarist Neal Schon in a side project dubbed Soul SirkUS. He has spent a number of years helming the group Talisman, and has also released several solo albums.

Def Leppard and Journey are both members of an exclusive list of artists who have seen at least one of their albums achieve Diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, signifying sales of 10 million copies. Leppard accomplished that feat with 1983’s “Pyromania” and its follow-up, “Hysteria,” while Journey scored the award for its 1988 best-of set, “Journey: Greatest Hits.

The group has sold more than 65 million albums. Played for tens of millions of people on almost every continent and have been rocking for almost three decades.

After all that, Def Leppard wanted to glam it up and get back to its roots, so it recorded “Yeah!” to show they’re more than just a hard rock band.

Singer Joe Elliot, speaking from an island off the coast of Spain, explained, again, why Def Leppard should not be lopped into the category of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

AP: Why now, after 25 years of playing hard rock, did you decide to cover the glam rock era of the ’70s?

Elliot: People would ask if we’re a heavy-metal band and we’d say, “No, that’s Black Sabbath, Anthrax.” It may come as a bit of a shock to some people, but we weren’t weaned on Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. These songs are a major part of where we come from. It was the opportunity to show the world where our true roots lie.

AP: Why call it “Yeah!” and not something like “Glam It Up!”

Elliot: I think it’s more to the point. It’s the one word that everybody shouts when their favorite band starts or your favorite team scores a goal. It’s a collective, excitable utterance that really summed up what these songs meant when we heard them. I’ve wanted to do a covers album from as soon as I could walk. It’s not like we’ve run out of ideas — we have half the next album written.

AP: But you just put out “Yeah!”?

Elliot: We have loads written and demo-ed. Hopefully, when we finish this tour, we won’t be starting from scratch. We’re one step ahead of ourselves for the first time in our careers. I doubt very much (the recording) will happen this year.

AP: At this point, why keep touring?

Elliot: It’s what we do! That’s like asking a doctor, why do you still want to be a doctor? Why would you want to end it if you enjoy it? We’re 20 years younger than the Stones. They’re still touring and they certainly don’t need the money.

AP: Do you think you still rock out as hard now?

Elliot: I think so. I could run faster back then but I couldn’t sing as well. How fast do you actually have to run? I think (Mick) Jagger rocks out more now than he did back in the day. Now, he’s like 62 years old … and I’m like 18 years younger. We don’t just stand around doing nothing, but we rock I suppose. It’s a funny word to use.

AP: What’s your biggest backstage diva request?

Elliot: We’re a big juicing band. We drink pints of juice. We’re very into the organic stuff. We have two-and-a-half vegetarians in the band. As long as we have our organic vegetables and decent grub — you have to look after yourself on the road.

AP: What’s something you need to have on the tour bus with you?

Elliot: The telly. We have the attack bus and the wuss bus — one is nonsmoking and nondrinking. We stay up later (on the attack bus), have a satellite dish, which is great until you go under a bridge.

AP: How does it feel that Arctic Monkeys, another Sheffield band, just broke a first-week debut sales record in the UK?

Elliot: I think they’re fantastic. I completely dig ’em. I’m sure if anyone asked the Arctic Monkeys if they liked us, they would say they absolutely hate us.

Def Leppard, Journey to Rock Arenas

No strangers to arenas, Eighties rockers Def Leppard and Seventies ballad masters Journey are teaming up for a massive, three-month summer tour that kicks off June 23rd in Camden, New Jersey, and wraps August 31st in Seattle.Journey has sold more than seventy-five million albums over the course of their three-decade career. Last year, the band released their nineteenth album, Generations, and were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Although Journey, after seven years of animosity, were reunited with former vocalist Steve Perry at the unveiling of their star last January, Perry will not be touring with the group. Journey’s current lineup, in place since 1998, features Steve Augeri on vocals, founding guitarist Neal Schon, bassist Ross Valory, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and drummer Deen Castronovo.

Meanwhile, Def Leppard released a twenty-fifth anniversary greatest hits package last year, and spent the better part of 2005 touring alongside Bryan Adams and Cheap Trick. While the rockers are slated to release Yeah! — a collection of covers of tunes by bands from E.L.O. to Thin Lizzy — in time for their summer tour, the group is also preparing to record a new studio album, due in 2007.

“We’ve really tried to gather ideas on the road,” guitarist Vivian Campbell told Rolling Stone earlier this year.
